Details & Inspection Notes

Powermaster's 9004-15 PowerMAX Plus is a gear-reduction starter in natural finish, built as a Hitachi-style PE106 replacement for AMC and Jeep V8 and inline-six engines, covering early models up to 1987 and excluding the 4.0L.

Output

Powermaster's spec sheet credits this starter with 180 lb-ft of cranking torque, gearing it down 3.7 to 1, for 1.8 kW of output (2.5 horsepower) through a 9-tooth drive gear, rated for engines up to 16:1 compression. The starter turns clockwise and mounts on an adjustable billet aluminum block.

Mounting and clearance

Exhaust and oil-pan interference, a common problem on a swapped-in starter, is designed out of this housing, and on the tightest bays it can go in upside down, solenoid facing the ground, for even more room. This unit is made in the USA.

Confirm your application

Powermaster's own fitment note for this starter reads "up to 1987" for AMC and pre-1987 for Jeep without a specific starting model year, so confirm the exact year and engine of your AMC or Jeep V8/L6 against Powermaster's current application data before ordering, and remember the 4.0L engine is excluded regardless of year.

Who it suits

This starter fits an owner replacing a Hitachi PE106-style starter on a pre-1987 AMC or Jeep V8 or L6 who wants higher cranking torque than the original unit without a chrome or show finish.
