Details & Inspection Notes

Yamaha's 2019 F40JEHA puts the jet-drive, 40 hp midrange four-stroke on a tiller handle instead of console controls, with electric start on a 20-inch shaft. At 227 pounds, it is the heaviest jet-drive configuration in this batch, the cost of tiller hardware plus an electric starter.

Jet drive, tiller control

Running a jet pump instead of a propeller is about where you boat, not how you steer; this configuration lets someone who prefers tiller handling still get into shallow, weedy or rocky water a propeller-driven motor would struggle through.

What that tradeoff looks like

Expect somewhat less top speed and efficiency than a propeller-driven 40 hp motor running the same water, in exchange for the ability to run skinny without fouling the drive.

Checking wear over time

The impeller inside a jet pump wears gradually from sand and grit passing through it, so a drop in top speed over a season is often that wear showing up rather than anything wrong with the powerhead itself; a dealer can inspect it without pulling the whole lower unit.

Fitment

Confirm your boat takes tiller steering and that a 20-inch shaft fits your transom. A battery is required for the electric starter.

Engine

747cc, three cylinders, EFI induction, sold new.

Common questions

Tiller or remote steering? Tiller handle, controlled from the back of the boat rather than a console up front.
