2019 Mercury 5 HP 5MXLH Outboard Motor

With a 25-inch extra-long shaft, the 2019 Mercury 5 HP 5MXLH Outboard Motor is built to reach deep enough on a larger fishing or drift boat to work as a trolling or kicker motor, or as auxiliary power on a sailboat with a tall transom.

Why the extra-long shaft

This is the longest shaft Mercury offers in its 5 horsepower line, meant for boats where a shorter shaft would leave the propeller running too shallow to bite properly. The single cylinder here is set at 123 cc, or 7.5 cubic inches by Mercury's other measure, through a 59 by 45 millimeter bore and stroke, carbureted and fired by digital CD ignition, with a rev ceiling of 4500 to 5500 rpm, turning a propeller sized at 7.7 inches across with an 8.0-inch pitch, three aluminum blades rather than the high-thrust unit fitted to the 5MLHA. Lubrication runs through a trochoid pump, and an optional 12-volt, 50-watt alternator can be installed if charging capability is wanted.

Setup and weight

External fuel tank connection is standard here, so an optional external tank and line can be added for longer trips beyond the internal tank's range. Saltwater-rated construction, a 2.15:1 gear ratio, and forward-neutral-reverse shift round out the motor. Dry weight is 59 pounds, and it carries Mercury Marine's three-year warranty.
