Details & Inspection Notes
The 2018 Yamaha VF175LA is a new 175 HP V MAX SHO, the step up from the VF150 in the same 2.8-liter in-line four platform, and Yamaha's own testing clocked it roughly 5 mph quicker than its 150 HP sibling under a tournament load. It weighs 480 lbs dry on a 20-inch shaft.
Where the extra power comes from
Precision multi-point EFI and a long-track intake tuned for the higher output rating work with an engine control module that reads atmospheric and operating conditions continuously to adjust timing on the fly. Gear ratio is set at 1.86:1 to match the added horsepower to the prop.
Rigging and ratings
Controls are mechanical, which keeps rigging simple on most bass, bay and flats hulls, and the motor works with analog gauges or Yamaha's 6Y5 digital and Command Link displays. The 50-amp alternator is rated an 11 percent gain over the two-stroke 150 HPDI it replaces in Yamaha's lineup.
What protects the engine if oil pressure drops or it overheats? An onboard warning system automatically cuts maximum RPM to 2,000 and also guards against over-rev, water in the fuel, and starting in gear.
What comes in the box? Expect a rigging kit covering the tiller handle, fuel tank and its quick-connect line, a tilt switch, throttle control, cables, trim limiter, oil, propeller and anti-theft hardware.
Warranty? Coverage runs three years pleasure, three years government, one year commercial, under Yamaha's standard terms for this engine family.
