2018 Yamaha F9.9 Portable Tiller F9.9SMHB Outboard Motor

This 2018 F9.9 Portable Tiller, code F9.9SMHB, carries the same redesigned 212 cc twin-cylinder block as Yamaha's other updated F9.9 models, here on the shorter 15-inch shaft, tipping the scale at 87 lbs dry, with manual or electric starting.

Shaft and fit

Yamaha also sells this motor on a longer shaft that sits differently on a taller transom, so check the 15-inch figure here against the boat first. The tiller handle is shortened compared with earlier designs, with a reshaped shift lever for a better one-hand grip.

Durability features

A narrower center section in the driveshaft is designed to twist if the propeller strikes an underwater object, protecting the powerhead and propshaft rather than passing the impact through the gearcase. Front-mounted controls handle shifting and shallow-water drive in one place, and the sump needs around 0.8 liters of oil, Yamalube's 4-M FC-W formulation by Yamaha's recommendation.

What charges the battery? A 12-volt, 6-amp alternator, cooled by raw water with thermostatic control. Can it be fitted with electric start later? This trim already offers manual or electric starting from the factory, with full throttle landing near 6000 rpm. What is the gear ratio? 13/27, or 2.08:1, the same final ratio as the other redesigned F9.9 shaft lengths sold under this newer, more compact generation of the model.
