Details & Inspection Notes
Yamaha's 2018 F50 Midrange Mechanical, model code F50LB, is built around a 1-liter, inline-four, single-overhead-camshaft block making 50 hp on a 20-inch shaft, aimed at inshore fishing boats that want power-to-weight without stepping up to the larger F70.
What to check before ordering
Match the 16-amp alternator output against any gauges or electronics planned for the boat, and note the dry weight of 247 lbs when sizing a bracket or lift. It is built for duty in either fresh water or salt.
Trolling and control
Trolling speed can be dialed in through a Multi-Function Tiller Handle, a helm-mounted remote switch, or Command Link gauges, in steps of 50 rpm. Tilt reaches 69 degrees and trim swings from -4 to +16 degrees, and the wet sump takes 2.1 liters of oil with the filter fitted, 1.9 without. Full throttle operation peaks close to 6000 rpm, with a magnetic drain plug in the lower unit catching metal particles before they damage the gearcase.
What protects it against low oil pressure? An engine warning system that automatically cuts maximum rpm to 2000 if it detects low oil pressure or overheating. Does it come with a specific propeller? Confirm the included propeller and gear ratio with us before ordering, since Yamaha varies these by rigging. Is it compatible with fresh and salt water? Yes, both are within its rated use.
