Details & Inspection Notes
The 2018 9.9MH is the short-shaft, pull-start configuration of this 9.9 hp lineup, weighing 84 lb and built for small, low-transom boats rather than anything needing a deep-reaching shaft or extra thrust at the prop.
Why the short shaft matters
A 15-inch shaft is sized for low-sided, shallow-transom hulls such as jon boats, skiffs, and compact pontoons, or for auxiliary duty on a sailboat; running it on a boat with a tall transom leaves the propeller riding too high in the water to push effectively. Confirm transom height matches a short-shaft mount before ordering.
What this version leaves out
This runs the standard gearcase at a 2.08:1 ratio, spinning an aluminum propeller with three blades, an 8.0-inch pitch, and an 8.5-inch span, rather than a larger four-blade CommandThrust unit, which keeps weight and cost down for boats that don't need extra low-speed thrust.
Simple to operate
Starting is by pull-cord, and tilt uses a ratcheting manual lever, so there's no battery or electric system to maintain over the life of the engine. Steering, throttle, and shift are all worked from the tiller grip in one motion.
Common questions
Is this electric start? No, starting is manual, pull-cord style.
Does it run in saltwater? Yes, it carries a saltwater rating.
What propeller is included? A three-blade aluminum prop, 8.0-inch pitch, 8.5 inches tip to tip.
