Details & Inspection Notes
SKU 8EH-18 marks the 2018 build of Mercury's 8EH, an 8 HP twin-cylinder four-stroke carried on the short shaft, tiller-steered and electric-started, at 91 lbs.
Electric start equipment
Power for the starter comes from a built-in 12-volt alternator rated 76 watts and 6 amps, standard on this configuration, with a manual backup through the cowl if the battery is ever low. Tilt and trim angle set through Mercury's patented auto-ratchet hardware, worked by hand right at the tiller without separate tools.
Fit before you buy
This short shaft fits jon boats, skiffs, and inflatables riding lower at the transom; Mercury sells the long-shaft version of this same engine under a separate model code, so double-check which length your boat calls for. Mercury rates the motor for saltwater, the gearcase shifts forward-neutral-reverse at 2.08:1, and the standard three-year factory warranty applies from the purchase date. Keep the propeller nut torque checked after the first few hours of running.
Q: Which shaft length does the 8EH use? The short one; the long-shaft version carries a separate model code.
Q: Does this one start electrically or by hand? Electrically, with a manual pull-cord option through the cowl as backup.
Q: Does it handle saltwater okay? Yes, Mercury rates this motor for saltwater service.
