The 2018 Mercury 5 Hp 5MXLH Outboard Motor is the prior model-year version of Mercury's extra-long-shaft 5 horsepower outboard, built on a 25-inch shaft and carrying no internal battery of its own.

Who reaches for the extra-long shaft

Owners running a larger fishing or drift boat who want this motor as a trolling or kicker engine, or sailors needing auxiliary power on a boat with a tall transom, are the main buyers for a shaft this long rather than a shorter option elsewhere in Mercury's 5 horsepower line. Mercury sizes the single cylinder at 123 cc, 7.5 cubic inches by its other measure, bored to 59 millimeters with a 45-millimeter stroke.
