The 2018 Mercury 5 Hp 5MLHA Outboard Motor pairs the same 5 horsepower single-cylinder engine as the 5MH with a 20-inch long shaft, a built-in alternator with charging cord, and a high-thrust propeller, aimed at heavier hulls and sailboat auxiliary power.

What the high-thrust setup changes

A high-thrust propeller with a 6.0-inch pitch trades some top speed for pulling power at low rpm, which suits a sailboat being pushed through the water rather than a light jon boat planing out. The engine itself displaces 123 cc, which Mercury also lists as 7.5 cubic inches, through a 59 by 45 millimeter bore and stroke, reaching 4500 to 5500 rpm at full throttle on a carburetor with digital CD ignition and electronic spark advance. Lubrication runs through a trochoid pump, and charging comes built in: a cord-equipped alternator rated 4 amps and 50 watts, wired in rather than offered as an installable option the way it is on the 5MH.

Fit and condition

The 20-inch shaft here is longer than Mercury's short-shaft 5 horsepower options, so check your transom height before ordering rather than assuming it will fit. Saltwater-rated construction and a 2.15:1 gear ratio carry over from the rest of the 5 horsepower line, and this motor has no internal battery. At 58 pounds dry, it is backed by Mercury Marine's three-year warranty, same as the rest of the lineup it belongs to.
