2018 Mercury 5 Hp 5MH Outboard Motor

Nearly identical to the newer 5MH, the 2018 Mercury 5 Hp 5MH Outboard Motor is the earlier model-year version of this short-shaft, carbureted, manual-start tiller outboard, with no internal battery of its own.

Why the model year is the main difference

Mercury carried this 5 horsepower single-cylinder design forward essentially unchanged: displacement still comes in at 7.5/123 by Mercury's cubic-inch-and-cc figure, bore and stroke still measure 2.32 by 1.77 inches, and the rev range still tops out at 5500 rpm, with 4500 rpm at the bottom, fed by a carburetor rather than EFI. Pressurized wet-sump lubrication uses SAE 10W-30 oil, CDI ignition with electric spark advance provides the spark, and a 2.15 gear ratio turns a 7.7-inch-diameter, 8.0-inch-pitch aluminum propeller. Since there is no internal battery, an owner who wants electric accessories would need Mercury's optional 12-volt, 50-watt alternator installed separately rather than relying on a built-in charging circuit.

Build and what is included

Saltwater-rated construction, a stainless steel water pump housing, and sacrificial zinc anodes protect this motor from corrosion. Weighing 55 pounds, it is light enough to carry by its integrated handle, and Mercury's box includes the internal fuel tank, owner's manual, an aluminum propeller, four-stroke oil, and a tool kit, all under the Mercury Marine three-year warranty.
