Details & Inspection Notes

The 2017 Yamaha VF250LA tops out the SHO V6 range at 250 HP at 5,500 RPM, running the same six-cylinder, 60-degree, 4.2-liter block as its siblings. This LA trim carries a 20-inch shaft and 505 lb dry weight.

Tuned at the top of the range

Plasma-fused sleeveless cylinders and a long-track induction system feeding electronic multi-point injection are the backbone of this powerhead, calibrated here for the higher output rating. A single timing belt with an automatic tensioner is designed to hold proper tension without routine adjustment.

Instrumentation and rigging

Optional Command Link gauges can show real-time engine, boat and environmental data in square or round displays for single- or multi-engine rigs. Mounting centers measure 28.6 inches and maximum steering angle is 35 degrees from center. The spark plug spec is LFR6A-11-00-000.

What's the gear ratio and alternator rating? Expect a 1.75:1 final drive and up to 50 amps of charging, with 46 amps already on tap at a 1,000 RPM idle.

How much oil does it take? 6.7 liters (7.1 qt) with the filter fitted.

Tilt and trim range? 66 degrees of tilt, -4 through +16 degrees of trim.

Fuel requirements? Regular unleaded, minimum 89 octane, tolerant of up to a 10 percent ethanol blend.

Cooling is water/thermostatic, starting is electric, and Yamaha's coverage here is three years pleasure, three years government and one year commercial use.
