2017 Yamaha VF150 LA VMAX SHO Outboard Motor

Sharing its 2785 cc, 16-valve inline four with Yamaha's JB-trim VMAX SHO, this 2017 VF150 LA is rated the same 150 hp at 5500 rpm, the difference between the two trim codes being control linkage and rigging hardware rather than the powerhead itself.

Before you rig it

Because Yamaha uses the LA code for a particular control setup, check that code against existing cables and gauges rather than assuming it interchanges freely with the JB trim. Electric start, power trim and tilt are standard, and dry weight comes in at 480 lbs.

Under load

The block runs 10.3:1 compression with a single electronically controlled throttle valve, and its final drive works out to a 2.0:1, or 28:14, ratio. Yamaha calls for regular unleaded at a minimum of 89 octane, and the wet sump takes 4.5 liters of oil with a filter or 4.3 liters without. A 50-amp alternator supports onboard electronics, and tilt reaches 70 degrees while the top end sits near 6000 rpm.

How is it rated for emissions? C.A.R.B. gives it 3 stars, with ethanol capped at 10 percent. How does trim adjust? From -4 to +16 degrees, with electric trim and tilt control. Does it share the JB trim's fuel injection? Yes, the same four independent injectors and long-track induction system carry over.
