Details & Inspection Notes

Yamaha's 2017 VF150 JB VMAX SHO runs a 2785 cc inline four, a larger VMAX SHO block tuned to 150 hp at 5500 rpm through 16 valves and four independent fuel injectors, fed by a single electronically controlled throttle valve.

Fit and rigging

The JB trim code matters for matching control linkage and rigging hardware, since Yamaha sells this same 150 hp VMAX SHO under more than one trim designation; starting is electric with power trim and tilt. Dry weight is 480 lbs.

Running specs

Compression is 10.3:1, the gear ratio works out to 2.0:1, or 28:14, and the rev band reaches roughly 6000 at full throttle. A 50-amp alternator covers accessories and charging; trim moves -4 to +16 degrees, and tilt reaches 70 degrees. Yamaha specifies regular unleaded at a minimum of 89 pump octane for this larger block.

Fuel and emissions

Oil capacity comes in at 4.5 liters with the filter fitted, 4.3 liters without it, and the motor carries a C.A.R.B. rating of 3 stars with ethanol content capped at 10 percent.

Is it rigged the same as the LA trim? The powerhead is identical; only control linkage and rigging hardware differ between the two trim codes. What spark injection does it use? Electronic multi-point precision fuel injection through four independent injectors and a tuned long-track induction system.
