Details & Inspection Notes
The 9.9MXLH takes the standard-gearcase 9.9 and stretches the shaft to 25 inches for taller transoms, while keeping the same pull-cord start, manual tilt, and standard propeller as the shorter-shaft versions sold in this family.
Extra-long shaft, not extra thrust
It's worth knowing this version does not carry Mercury's BigFoot or CommandThrust lower unit despite the longer shaft; it uses the same 2.08:1 standard gearcase and an aluminum propeller with three blades, pitched at 8.0 inches and spanning 8.5 inches, as the base 9.9. The longer shaft exists purely to reach a deeper-mounted transom, common on sailboats and some taller pontoons.
Simple to run and maintain
Pull-cord starting and a ratcheting manual tilt lever mean no battery and fewer parts, and one hand on the tiller covers steering, throttle, and shift for straightforward trolling or auxiliary use on a quiet afternoon out on the water.
Deciding if you need this over the shorter-shaft version
Measure your transom before choosing between this and the shorter-shaft 9.9MLH; the extra shaft length only helps if your mounting point actually sits that much higher off the water.
Common questions
