Details & Inspection Notes
Stepping up from the short-shaft 9.9EH, this 2017 Mercury 9.9ELH (SKU 9.9ELH-17) runs the long shaft with electric starting and tiller control.
Why a long shaft
The extra shaft length targets higher-transom small pontoons, skiffs, and jon boats, plus sailboat auxiliary use, where a short-shaft 9.9 would sit too far out of the water. Electric start and an auto-ratchet trim system let the operator start and adjust running angle without manual cranking or extra tools, and the multi-function tiller handles shifting, throttle, and steering together.
Engine and warranty
The 76-watt alternator here powers the electric starter, with a pull-cord backup built into the cowl. Gearcase ratio comes in at 2.08:1. Mercury Marine's factory term protects this unit for three years, counted from the day of sale. Keep the swivel bracket greased so steering effort stays light through a season of use.
Q: Short or long shaft on this model? Long.
Q: Is tilt powered or manual on this motor? Manual, through the auto-ratchet system rather than a powered trim motor.
Q: Does it need a separate battery to start? Yes, electric starting draws on the boat's own battery, not an internal one.
Q: Can this motor be used in saltwater? Yes, Mercury Marine rates it for saltwater running.
