Details & Inspection Notes
Pull-cord starting on a 15-inch shaft is the formula behind Mercury's 2017 15MH, a 15 HP tiller outboard built around a four-stroke, 21.4-cubic-inch powerhead. Skipping electric start keeps weight down at the transom, which owners of smaller jon boats, dinghies, and inflatables often prefer over the added bulk of a battery and starter motor.
Charging and electrical
Unlike some manual-start 15 HP motors in this lineup that leave charging as an optional add-on, this 2017 model includes a 12-amp, 138-watt alternator standard, so it can keep a small battery topped off for electronics even without electric start. Full throttle lands between 5400 and 5600 RPM, and the carbureted engine pulls fuel through a 6.6-gallon external tank.
Build and coverage
Saltwater-rated construction, a 2.15:1 gearcase, and a 3-blade aluminum propeller round out the mechanical side. Mercury positions this motor as a lower-cost way into the 15 HP class and backs it with a three-year factory warranty, and the tiller grip includes adjustable steering tension for a tighter or looser feel at the helm.
Does it charge a battery without electric start? Yes, the standard 12-amp, 138-watt alternator can keep a small battery charged.
What shaft length is this? The 15-inch short-shaft version.
Is the tilt power-assisted? No, both trim and tilt are hand-adjusted on this particular engine.
