Details & Inspection Notes

Unlike its rope-start siblings, the E15TEG4 is the electric-start build of Evinrude's 2017 15 hp carbureted outboard, with a 12-volt, 12-amp alternator keeping a battery charged as it runs. That hardware adds weight: 120 lbs versus the lighter rope-start versions of the same engine, carried on a 15-inch shaft.

What's under it

Bore comes in at 2.4 in, stroke at 2.36 in, for 351 cc of displacement out of the 2-cylinder carbureted block — 21.4 cubic inches by the other measure. Wide-open throttle spins the 2.15:1 final drive between 5,000 and 6,000 rpm.

How it's set up

Tiller steering and a choice of manual or power tilt trim carry over from the rest of the family. A single carburetor and water cooling keep the mechanics straightforward, fuel routes through the prop exhaust for a quieter note, and a 3.1-gallon external tank supplies it. The forward-neutral-reverse shift lever sits up front, with a carrying handle and rear grip for moving the motor by hand.

Upkeep and warranty

Thirty-two ounces of Evinrude/Johnson 5W40 Ultra 4-Stroke oil and 87-octane gas keep it fed. Evinrude's coverage here runs 3 years, non-declining, and the motor meets EPA 2013 / CARB 3-Star emissions rules.

Is this rope or electric start? Electric, with its own 12-volt, 12-amp alternator.

What does it weigh? 120 lbs.
