Details & Inspection Notes
This new Tohatsu MFS90AETL is a 90 hp outboard with four cylinders, four strokes, a 20-inch shaft, remote mechanical steering, electric starting, and 392 lbs on Tohatsu's own scale. It is built around the same low-gear, flush-system, performance-exhaust package used across the current MFS90 range.
Idle, gearing, and maintenance features
Idle can be set anywhere from 650 rpm up to 850 rpm rather than staying fixed, which helps when trolling or holding position calls for a specific speed. A 2.08:1 low gear ratio is built in for extra pulling power at low speed, and rinsing down after a trip is handled by a built-in fresh-water flush rather than an improvised hose setup.
Power delivery and the electrical system
Tuned to Tohatsu's own 4-2-1 exhaust layout and matched ECU calibration, this powerhead is engineered so the company's claimed gains, quicker time to plane and continued speed building afterward, come from the exhaust and electronics working together rather than either alone. A 41-amp alternator keeps a 12-volt battery and accessories charged.
What to confirm before ordering
This is the 20-inch shaft MFS90AETL, so measure your transom before buying. Control-side, this engine can take a multi-function tiller handle, or be set up for remote operation instead; Tohatsu sells either kit on its own, worth settling before cables get ordered.
Rounding out the spec sheet: displacement of 1995cc, a full-throttle range of 5000-6000 rpm, and 5 years of warranty coverage.
