Details & Inspection Notes
Listed as the MFS90AETUL, this new Tohatsu 90 hp outboard runs a four-cylinder four-stroke head, remote mechanical steering, and electric start, carried on a 25-inch shaft with Tohatsu listing its weight at 392 lbs. That longer leg is built for taller transoms than its shorter-shaft MFS90 siblings use.
What is built into the MFS90 line
Idle on this engine can be dialed anywhere between 650 and 850 rpm instead of sitting at one fixed point, and gearing is kept low, at a 2.08:1 ratio, favoring low-end pulling power for getting a loaded boat moving. A fresh-water flushing setup is built in, making rinsing the engine down after each outing quicker than running a hose into open intakes by hand.
Exhaust tuning and charging
Tohatsu's 4-2-1 exhaust tuning spreads torque more evenly across the rev range on this engine, a design the company says helps a boat accelerate onto plane and keep pulling toward top speed. A 41-amp alternator covers charging for the 12-volt system that also runs power trim and tilt.
Ordering notes
Confirm the 25-inch shaft suits your transom height before ordering, since this is specifically the long-shaft MFS90. Rigging is flexible here: pick a remote rigging kit, or go with a multi-function tiller handle instead, since Tohatsu sells both separately for this engine. Browse other outboard motors for shorter-shaft options in the same horsepower class.
Specs at a glance: 1995cc of displacement, full throttle in the 5000-6000 rpm band, and Tohatsu's 5-year warranty.
