Details & Inspection Notes

Shorter shaft, same 50-hp heart: this new Tohatsu MFS50AWETS fits a three-cylinder, EFI-fed four-stroke displacing 866cc onto a 15-inch shaft; electric starting and the tiller-or-remote-mechanical option both come standard. A 214-lb base weight becomes 225 once the tiller handle is fitted.

Why the shorter shaft

This 15-inch length suits boats with lower transom heights than the longer shaft Tohatsu also builds for this 50-hp motor, so confirm your own transom measurement before ordering since the two shaft lengths are not interchangeable. Every other mechanical detail on this configuration matches the rest of the 50-hp line, from the gear case to the cooling system, so shaft length is really the only decision to make.

Power delivery and upkeep

A reworked, lower-ratio gear case adds low-end pull for a loaded hull, and idle speed ranges from 650 up to 950 rpm for trolling or holding position with minimal throttle input. The water pump housing's stainless steel liner is built for durability, and full throttle tops out across 5000-6000 rpm, enough range for most inshore and bay use without pushing the engine past its comfortable cruising band.

  • Shaft on this unit: 15 in.
  • Idle adjustment: 650-950 rpm
  • Steering choice: tiller or remote-mechanical

What shaft length does this unit use? 15 inches. Does it support remote steering? Yes.
