Details & Inspection Notes
Tohatsu's MFS4DDL, offered here new, is built around a 123cc single-cylinder four-stroke that makes 4 hp. It runs a 20-inch shaft with tiller steering and manual start, and comes in at 59 lbs on the scale, light enough for one person to carry to and from a car or dock.
Why the top-mounted tank matters
Rather than hanging an external tank off the side, Tohatsu builds the fuel supply into the top of this motor, which keeps the rigging simple and leaves less to snag gear while you are loading or unloading a small boat. The carburetor-fed engine tops out in a 4500-5500 rpm full-throttle range, enough for the dinghies, skiffs and jon boats this size of motor is meant for, and simple enough mechanically that most routine care is within reach of a boat owner rather than a shop.
What ships with it
Tohatsu throws in a propeller, the .3-gallon internal tank, and a fitting that lets you add an external tank if you prefer one. You'll also find the owner's manual in the carton, together with a modest set of service tools and a cutoff switch on its own lanyard, so the motor is ready to run straight out of the box.
- Shaft length: 20 inches
