Tohatsu 40HP MFS40AWETL Outboard Motor

This used Tohatsu, white-cowled and stamped MFS40AWETL, delivers 40 hp from a three-cylinder four-stroke on a 20-inch shaft, electric start, steered either from the tiller or a remote-mechanical station. On the scale it comes to 214 lbs bare, 225 once the tiller handle is on.

Picking a cowling color

Tohatsu finishes this 40-hp engine in two cowling colors, Beluga White and Aqua Marine Blue, and this particular unit is the white one, so match that against whatever your rigging or boat calls for. Aside from color, the mechanical specification is the same 866cc three-cylinder EFI block used across the rest of the 40-hp line, and buying used does not change that underlying hardware.

What it is built to do

Digital CD ignition and electronic fuel injection give this motor its throttle response and fuel economy, and the charging side runs through a 21-amp alternator rated for this 40-hp block. This example still comes with power trim and tilt, the freshwater flush fitting on the lower cowling, a cutoff lanyard, basic hand tools, and a printed manual, carried over unchanged from when it left the factory.
