Details & Inspection Notes

This new Tohatsu MFS40AETS takes a 40-hp, EFI-fed, three-cylinder four-stroke displacing 866cc and fits it with a 15-inch shaft, an electric starter, and the option of tiller or remote-mechanical steering. Listed weight is 209 lbs, climbing to 220 lbs with the tiller handle attached.

Why the shorter shaft matters here

Measuring your boat's transom height before ordering is the single most important fitment step with this motor, since a shaft that does not match the transom pushes the propeller too deep or too shallow in the water, hurting both performance and cooling. Tohatsu builds this one on its shorter 40-hp shaft option for boats with lower transoms, so get that measurement right before you place an order.

What is under the cowling

Electronic fuel injection and digital CD ignition take care of throttle response and fuel economy, backed by a high-output 21-amp alternator for charging. Steering friction can be adjusted, and a trim tab is built in to lighten the effort needed to hold a straight line. Standard equipment also covers the freshwater flush system, power trim and tilt, basic service tools, a lanyard cutoff, and the printed manual, enough to keep the motor running well without sourcing extras.
