Details & Inspection Notes
Rated 35 hp at the shaft, or 50 hp at the powerhead, this new Tohatsu MFS35AJETETL is a jet-drive outboard built for shallow water where a standard propeller would strike bottom. Under the cowling sits a three-cylinder EFI four-stroke displacing 866cc, rigged with electric start, a 20-inch shaft, and tiller-or-remote-mechanical steering, weighing 234 lbs.
What switching to a jet drive changes
Replacing the propeller and gear case with a jet pump lifts the running gear up out of harm's way, which is the entire point of choosing this configuration over a prop-driven 35-hp for rivers, flats or rocky shallows. Rigging needs vary so much from one jet boat to the next that Tohatsu no longer bundles helm hardware with its current jet remote-control outboards, this one included: the remote box at the helm, the tiller handle, control cabling, gauges, a fuel/water separator, the propeller itself, and the fuel tank and line are all left out of the box.
Ordering the missing rigging
Ask us about sourcing whichever of those pieces your particular boat needs before you settle on a layout, since jet rigging differs by hull. On the motor itself, Tohatsu still fits the jet lower unit and power trim and tilt at the factory, along with a few hand tools, the charging hardware, and a printed manual for day-one setup.
- Full-throttle rpm: 5000-6000
- Weight: 234 lbs
- Cylinders: 3
Does it come with a propeller? No, a jet pump replaces the propeller on this configuration. What does Tohatsu still include at the factory? The jet lower unit and trim-and-tilt hardware, plus the tools, charging parts and manual noted above.
