Details & Inspection Notes

This new Tohatsu MFS30CL is the manual-start version of the three-cylinder, 526cc 30-hp four-stroke, with a 20-inch shaft and tiller rigging. At 161 lbs it sits among the lighter motors in its horsepower class, worth noting whenever you are lifting it onto a transom or a small trailer by hand.

What the gear case gives you

Behind this motor sits a 2.17:1 gear ratio tuned toward low-end thrust, which shows up as a stronger push off idle and a heavier load capacity than some competing engines of the same output. Larger-diameter pistons and a higher compression ratio than many comparable four-strokes add torque through the low and middle rpm range, which is where most boats actually spend their running time.

What is in the package

You also get a basic tiller handle and a manual that covers setup and care, with a small kit of tools and a stop-switch lanyard rounding things out for day-to-day running. EFI handles fuel metering, and the three-cylinder layout keeps vibration lower than a single- or twin-cylinder motor would at the same output.

  • Full throttle: 5250-6250 rpm
  • Starter: manual
  • Steering: tiller, handle included
