Details & Inspection Notes
The MFS3.5CL is the long-shaft version of Tohatsu's 3.5HP portable outboard, running a 20-inch shaft and weighing 43 lbs, a couple of pounds more than the short-shaft model. Carburetor induction feeds the single-cylinder 86cc block, paired with a manual tiller for starting and steering.
Matching shaft to transom
A 20-inch shaft suits a taller transom than the short-shaft version; measure your boat rather than assuming any particular length fits. The cowl includes front and back carrying handles, and the engine can be stored in several positions without spilling oil, though you should follow the owner's manual for exact storage and transport steps.
What's in the package
The engine ships with its printed manual, a modest kit of tools and spares, a pull-lanyard kill switch, a propeller already matched to the powerhead, and a small internal reserve of fuel, built in at roughly a quarter gallon.
Vibration control
A four-point vibration absorption system in the mounts cuts down on shake at the transom, which matters on a small boat where engine vibration is more noticeable than on a larger hull.
Common questions
How much heavier is this than the short-shaft version? About two pounds more, trading a little weight for a taller shaft.
Is the fuel tank built in or separate? It is a small internal tank, built into the engine rather than a separate purchase.
Full throttle for this little four-stroke lands at 5000 to 6000 rpm, covered by Tohatsu's 5-year warranty.
