Details & Inspection Notes

A pound lighter than its long-shaft sibling at 137 lbs, the MFS25DEFS is Tohatsu's short-shaft, tiller-only 25hp outboard, running the familiar 526cc three-cylinder four-stroke with electric start backed by a manual pull cord. Steering is at the tiller only, with no provision for a remote console.

Checking shaft length against your transom

A 15-inch shaft fits lower transoms than the long-shaft version; measure your boat's actual transom height rather than assuming a particular length will work, since getting this wrong hurts both speed and fuel economy.

What is not in the box

This model does not come with a propeller, which has to be ordered by phone or picked up in person before the engine can run.

Equipment that is included

In the box sit the fuel tank and its line, the tiller arm, a stop-lanyard kill switch, a set of basic tools and spare parts, and the owner's manual. Running angle on this tiller-only engine is set and locked by hand rather than adjusted from a trim switch.

Full throttle falls between 5000 and 6000 rpm, the engine uses EFI induction, and Tohatsu's 5-year warranty applies.

Common questions

Is this engine remote-capable? No, steering is tiller-only on this model.

What's the difference from the long-shaft version? Mainly shaft length and a pound of weight; features and power are the same.
