Details & Inspection Notes
At 41 lbs, the Tohatsu MFS2.5CS is a 2.5 hp four-stroke built for square back canoes, small tenders, inflatables, and other small craft rather than full-size boats. It uses tiller steering, manual rope start, and a 15-inch shaft, driven by a single-cylinder, 86cc carbureted engine. Browse other Tohatsu outboards if you need more power for a larger hull.
What it's meant for
This is a kicker-class motor, not a primary engine for a larger hull; it fits boats and inflatables sized for a small tender rather than a planing boat. Full throttle runs between 4,500 and 5,500 rpm, enough to move a light craft without the bulk of a bigger outboard. Tohatsu lists a speed range of roughly 6 to 10 mph depending on the hull it's pushing.
Fuel, storage, and handling
Fuel sits in a small internal tank built into the motor, holding about .26 gallons, so there's no external tank or line to connect before heading out. Front and back carrying handles make it easier to lift on and off a small boat by hand, and the engine can rest in more than one storage position without spilling oil, which matters when stowing it in a car trunk or a locker between trips. Tohatsu also built it to run on fuel that contains no ethanol, which helps cut emissions.
What's included
Each one leaves the crate with its propeller, the tank built into the block, and a printed manual, with a small spares kit and a cutoff cord tucked in alongside, all covered by a 5-year warranty.
Q: Do I need a separate fuel tank? No, fuel is carried internally, keeping rigging simple on a small boat.
