Details & Inspection Notes

The Maxstar 800 takes the same high-amperage TIG and stick platform as Miller's AC/DC machines but drops AC entirely, focusing everything on DC output for steel, stainless, and other non-aluminum work. Rated amperage reaches 800A, and the duty-cycle field here reads 60% at 600A.

Where DC-only matters

Without AC, this machine cannot clean oxide off aluminum the way an AC/DC unit can, so it suits shops welding steel, stainless, or exotic alloys rather than aluminum fabrication. Independent EP/EN amplitude control still splits heat between the work and the electrode, and pulse frequency on DC TIG reaches as high as 5,000 cycles per second for added arc stability.

Size and setup

At 198 lbs, it draws anywhere from 208 up through 575 volts without manual relinking, and nine saved program memories plus meter calibration round out the control panel for shops that need certification records. Stick welding draws on DIG-style arc shaping and an adaptive hot start, running cleanly from a 7018 rod through a harder-biting 6010.

What's actually included? Hardware includes a pair of adapters for thread-lock torches plus a single water-cooled adapter fitted to Miller's 18 or 20 series; the primary cord and TIG torch both ship separately.

Does this weld aluminum? No, it is DC only; AC/DC capability on aluminum calls for a different Miller machine instead.

Why choose DC-only over an AC/DC version? For shops that never need AC for aluminum, skipping it keeps the control set focused on stick and DC TIG work.

Welding Equipment Setup & Pre-Operation Checklist

  • Verify workshop mains voltage, circuit breaker rating, and phase match the welding machine specifications.
  • Inspect ground clamp cable, torch lead, and work cables for tight, clean, low-resistance connections.
  • Secure shielding gas cylinders upright with safety chains; inspect regulator and hose connections for gas leaks.
  • Confirm correct wire diameter, drive roll groove profile, and contact tip size match the spool installed.
