Details & Inspection Notes
This Maxstar 161 STL comes with the X-Case and an air-cooled WP-17 TIG torch already attached, but without the remote fingertip control found on the other STL package. Amperage is set from the front panel instead of the torch handle. It is a DC-only unit and will not TIG weld aluminum.
Ranges and sizing
On 120V, stick tops out near 90A and TIG near 130A; on 240V those climb to roughly 160A for stick and 160A for TIG. Mild steel and stainless capacity holds around 3/16 in, run on 5/32 in rod, with the power source itself at 13 lbs.
In the case
Along with the torch, the case carries a flow gauge regulator and gas hose and an AK2C kit of collets, nozzles, and ceriated tungsten in a few common sizes. The usual hardware ships too: cords for 120V and 240V, a stick holder and clamp with Dinse connectors, and a shoulder strap. Skipping the remote control keeps the kit simpler for a shop that only needs front-panel settings.
Why choose this over the fingertip version? It is simpler to set up if front-panel control is all that is needed; the torch and case are the same.
Is the torch air-cooled or water-cooled? Air-cooled, the WP-17.
Can the fingertip remote be added later? That would need the other STL listing or a compatible remote sourced separately; confirm compatibility with us first.

Welding Equipment Setup & Pre-Operation Checklist
- Verify workshop mains voltage, circuit breaker rating, and phase match the welding machine specifications.
- Inspect ground clamp cable, torch lead, and work cables for tight, clean, low-resistance connections.
- Secure shielding gas cylinders upright with safety chains; inspect regulator and hose connections for gas leaks.
- Confirm correct wire diameter, drive roll groove profile, and contact tip size match the spool installed.
