Details & Inspection Notes
Like its STH sibling, this Maxstar 161 STL ships complete with an air-cooled WP-17 TIG torch on 12.5 ft of cable, plus an RCCS-6M remote fingertip control, so amperage can be dialed in from the torch handle instead of the front panel. It is a DC-only machine and will not TIG weld aluminum.
Specifications to know
On 120V input, stick runs 20-90A and TIG runs 5-130A; on 240V, stick reaches 20-160A and TIG reaches 5-160A. Material capacity is about 3/16 in steel with 5/32 in rod. The power source weighs 13 lbs, light enough to move between a bench and a field job without a cart.
Inside the X-Case
Besides the torch and remote, the case holds a flow gauge regulator and gas hose, plus an AK2C kit of collets, nozzles, and tungsten sizes matched to the torch. The base hardware carries over too: cords for 120V and 240V, a stick electrode holder with its Dinse connector, a work clamp, and a shoulder strap.
What sets this apart from a bare Maxstar 161? The included TIG torch, remote fingertip control, and the protective case, rather than sourcing each piece separately.
Does the fingertip control also adjust stick amperage? It is built for TIG; stick settings are handled at the front panel.
Can the X-Case hold spare consumables too? There is some extra room beyond the listed accessory kit, though it is not built as dedicated storage.

Welding Equipment Setup & Pre-Operation Checklist
- Verify workshop mains voltage, circuit breaker rating, and phase match the welding machine specifications.
- Inspect ground clamp cable, torch lead, and work cables for tight, clean, low-resistance connections.
- Secure shielding gas cylinders upright with safety chains; inspect regulator and hose connections for gas leaks.
- Confirm correct wire diameter, drive roll groove profile, and contact tip size match the spool installed.
