Details & Inspection Notes
This version of the Maxstar 161 S pairs the same stick-only digital inverter with a padded X-Case built for hauling it to a job site. It runs on 120 or 240-volt power, and this listing's duty cycle field reads 20% at 60A.
Why the case matters
Between jobs, the X-Case keeps the power source, cords, and electrode holder together rather than loose in a truck bed, which matters for a welder that otherwise has no built-in storage. It welds mild steel and stainless in roughly the same range as the standard S model, up to about 3/16 in with 5/32 in rod, and the power source itself still weighs 13 lbs on its own, not counting the case.
What comes with the case
It ships with the same core hardware as the standard S model: cords for both 120V and 240V, a stick electrode holder and work clamp with their own Dinse connectors, and a shoulder strap with handle, now packed inside the X-Case instead of loose. There is still no TIG torch connector, since the S designation means stick welding only.
What's different from the base S model? Mainly the included carrying case; the welding setup is the same stick-only machine.
Will it weld aluminum? No. This is a DC stick machine with no TIG process at all.
Is the case roomy enough for extra electrodes? There is some spare room beyond the listed hardware, though it is not built as dedicated rod storage.

Welding Equipment Setup & Pre-Operation Checklist
- Verify workshop mains voltage, circuit breaker rating, and phase match the welding machine specifications.
- Inspect ground clamp cable, torch lead, and work cables for tight, clean, low-resistance connections.
- Secure shielding gas cylinders upright with safety chains; inspect regulator and hose connections for gas leaks.
- Confirm correct wire diameter, drive roll groove profile, and contact tip size match the spool installed.
