Details & Inspection Notes
The Maxstar 161 S is a stick-only inverter welder with a digital interface, built for shops that do not need TIG capability. It draws power from either a 120 or 240-volt cord, with an amperage range of 20-90A on 120V and 20-160A on 240V.
Daily use
A digital display and an encoder dial replace older analog controls, letting the process and amperage be chosen with a menu button and a short press-and-hold for the user menu. It handles mild steel and stainless up to roughly 3/16 in of material running 5/32 in electrodes. At 13 lbs, it is light enough to set on a tailgate or carry up a ladder.
What's included
The package includes the power source, a 6.5 ft cord for 120V and another for 240V, a 13 ft stick electrode holder with a 25 mm Dinse connector, a 10 ft work clamp with its own 25 mm Dinse connector, and a shoulder strap with handle. There is no carrying case with this version and no TIG torch connector, since this model does not weld TIG.
Can this run TIG? No. The S designation on this Maxstar 161 is stick only.
Does it need a special outlet? It ships with cords for both 120V and 240V, so it runs on either common shop voltage.
How is amperage adjusted? Through the front-panel encoder dial, after selecting stick as the active process.

Welding Equipment Setup & Pre-Operation Checklist
- Verify workshop mains voltage, circuit breaker rating, and phase match the welding machine specifications.
- Inspect ground clamp cable, torch lead, and work cables for tight, clean, low-resistance connections.
- Secure shielding gas cylinders upright with safety chains; inspect regulator and hose connections for gas leaks.
- Confirm correct wire diameter, drive roll groove profile, and contact tip size match the spool installed.
