Details & Inspection Notes
This Fusion 185 welder/generator combines a gas engine with 120/240-volt utility power through Miller's Power Shift system, so the operator can weld off the engine in the field or plug into wall power indoors. Its spec field rates it at 160A with a 20% duty cycle, and listed portability is 246 lbs.
Engine and fuel
Power comes from a Kohler CH440 engine, delivering 3.4 HP while turning at 3,600 RPM, with a 6.25-gallon tank on board. The multi-voltage plug connects straight into a 120V or 240V outlet with no adapter needed, and the unit can also drive an air plasma cutter such as a Spectrum 375.
Starting and arc quality
Electric start is standard, with a recoil pull built in as a backup should the battery run down. Inverter technology gives a stable stick arc that tolerates some variation in arc length and travel speed, useful for less experienced operators or awkward field positions where a steady hand is hard to keep.
Can two people weld off it at once? This is a single-operator stick machine; confirm multi-operator needs with us separately.
What's the exact weld output? Confirm the figure that matters to you with us before ordering, since the numbers given for this unit are not all consistent.
Is this suited to outdoor field work? Yes, the gas-engine side is built for exactly that, with wall power as the indoor backup.

Welding Equipment Setup & Pre-Operation Checklist
- Verify workshop mains voltage, circuit breaker rating, and phase match the welding machine specifications.
- Inspect ground clamp cable, torch lead, and work cables for tight, clean, low-resistance connections.
- Secure shielding gas cylinders upright with safety chains; inspect regulator and hose connections for gas leaks.
- Confirm correct wire diameter, drive roll groove profile, and contact tip size match the spool installed.
