Details & Inspection Notes
Hobart built the IronMan 240 (model 500574) as a heavy cabinet MIG wire welder for shops running steady work on aluminum, mild steel, and stainless. It's a single-phase, DC machine aimed at weekend warriors who have outgrown a lighter-duty unit.
What it's built to do
Hobart tuned the arc to cut down on spatter and post-weld cleanup, with infinite voltage control and infinite wire feed speed control for fine adjustment of penetration and bead shape. A built-in thermal overload protects the unit, and each drive roll is machined with a groove on either side, so flipping it over switches to a second wire diameter instead of buying another roll. The hinged door gives easy access to the wire drive for spool and roll changes, and the aluminum wire drive system handles 50-700 IPM of feed speed. Running aluminum is possible once the optional SpoolRunner 200 spool gun (770967) is added, and a unique spool hub takes 2, 10, 33, and 45 lb wire spools with a tool-less brake tension knob.
What ships with it
The package includes a 200A MIG gun on a 15 ft cable, a regulator/flowmeter, a gas hose with fitting, a primary input cable with plug, a 10 ft work cable with clamp, a dual-groove drive roll, extra contact tips, and the running gear and cylinder rack built into the cabinet.
Warranty and duty cycle
Hobart's coverage here is tiered: five years on the transformer, stabilizer, and generator; three years on electronics such as drive motors and rectifiers; one year on guns. At 175A the duty cycle is rated 60%. This machine carries a Proposition 65 notice, standard for welding equipment sold in California.

Welding Equipment Setup & Pre-Operation Checklist
- Verify workshop mains voltage, circuit breaker rating, and phase match the welding machine specifications.
- Inspect ground clamp cable, torch lead, and work cables for tight, clean, low-resistance connections.
- Secure shielding gas cylinders upright with safety chains; inspect regulator and hose connections for gas leaks.
- Confirm correct wire diameter, drive roll groove profile, and contact tip size match the spool installed.
