Details & Inspection Notes

The 2018 Suzuki DF15AL EFI is a 15 hp four-stroke built around battery-less electronic fuel injection, among the first systems in this horsepower class able to run EFI without a battery anywhere on board. It is tiller-steered, mounts on a transom recommended at 20 inches, and weighs 108 pounds in this electric-start trim.

Before you order

Line up your transom height with the 20-inch figure Suzuki recommends for this trim; getting that wrong is the most common fitment mistake on a tiller outboard. Throttle and steering both live on the tiller grip, and the engine starts electrically, with a 12-volt system then kept charged while it runs.

Inside the engine

Suzuki's lean-burn control continually adjusts the air-fuel ratio for efficiency, and this 2-cylinder SOHC engine tops out near a recommended 5000-6000 rpm. A 3-blade propeller, 9.25 inches across, does the pushing, and the usual safety net for this class is here too: an over-rev limiter plus a warning if oil pressure drops.

Suzuki packs in a 3.1-gallon tank, its matching fuel line, a printed manual, a spare-style aluminum propeller and a tool kit, and stands behind the motor for three years.

Can this EFI engine run without a battery? Yes, that is how the battery-less system is designed to work.

What transom height should I plan for? 20 inches is the recommended figure for this trim.
