The year before the following model-year refresh, this 2017 Tohatsu MFS8BS keeps the same formula seen across the family: two cylinders, 209cc, 8 hp, carbureted, but on a 15-inch shaft with tiller steering and manual start, weighing 81.5 lbs with a saltwater rating.

Suited to lower-transom hulls

Jon boats, small skiffs, pontoons and inflatables with a shallower transom height are the typical fit, and this configuration also sees use as auxiliary power on a sailboat or as a trolling motor where light weight and simple starting matter more than built-in charging.

Add-ons for later

No alternator comes standard on the manual-start version, but a 12V, 80W, 6A unit can be installed afterward. Protection on this engine matches the rest of the 8 hp family: digital CD ignition, a low oil pressure warning and an over-rev limiter watch over it, while zinc on the internal passages, sacrificial anodes, a stainless pump housing and the marine-alloy block beneath it all guard against corrosion.

The box includes a 3.1 gallon fuel tank, quick-connect fuel line, aluminum propeller and tool kit.
