Details & Inspection Notes
The 2017 Tohatsu MFS8BL trims weight by leaving out electric start entirely: two cylinders at 209cc, rated at 8 hp, steered by tiller rather than remote, pull-start only, and a scale weight of 83.8 lbs, roughly 7 lbs under the electric-start MFS8BEFL in the same family.
Where the lighter build pays off
Without a starter motor or standard alternator to carry, this version suits jon boats, small skiffs and inflatables where every pound matters, and it also sees use as a sailboat or trolling auxiliary, where simplicity beats having extra electrical hardware aboard. Transom height for this one should measure out to a 20-inch mount.
Adding charging capability later
An optional 12V, 80W, 6A alternator can be installed down the line if charging becomes necessary, rather than being built in from the factory. The engine still runs a digital CD ignition and a low oil pressure warning, with the same saltwater-focused build found elsewhere in the line: a marine-alloy block, a stainless-steel water pump housing, zinc coating on the internal passages and sacrificial anodes.
This motor comes with an aluminum propeller, a tool kit, the owner's manual, and the fuel side of things built around a tank sized at 3.1 gallons with its quick-connect line, all under a 5 year warranty.
Can an alternator be added after purchase? Yes, the 12V, 80W, 6A unit used on the electric-start sibling can be fitted to this block later if charging becomes necessary.
